It's another crispy fall weekend in Ann Arbor, and we're looking forward to watching Michigan take on Michigan State at home in the Big House!
Now, I'm not a sports expert, but I do love a little rivalry. Especially considering my nephew decided to become a Michigan State fan, and now that he's 18, I'm afraid there may be no going back. I also have to admit that I don't think this game is quite in the bag for Michigan. But enough of my sports commentary. Let's get to the real meat and potatoes and talk about what we're doing this weekend!
Because regardless if we win, we've still got to eat, drink, and shop. And Ann Arbor has no shortage of places to do all three. Something East Lansing could never compete with. 😉
I'm kidding, of course. #PureMichigan!
Now, I don't know about you, but I'm not quite ready for Christmas. I'm not ready to let go of the warm brown sugar, maple, and pumpkin-flavored everything. But it feels like we're starting to make the turn into the holiday season, with one foot still firmly planted in fall and the other inching toward Christmas.
I've had my fair share of pumpkin spice lattes this season, but I cannot seem to get my mind off the pumpkin cold brew at Orijin Bakery (617 E. Liberty St.). If you haven't been yet, it's definitely worth checking out. The pastries and croissants are delicious, but pair one with a coffee or latte, and you won't regret the $17 you just spent. Trust me.
If coffee isn't quite your thing, make your way over to Fourth Avenue and check out CupsnChai (214 S. Fourth Ave.). Ever since Taste of Ann Arbor, I've been pretty much exclusively drinking the Tiramisu Mocha Chai with oat milk. However, their seasonal drinks are equally refreshing and have become my go-to afternoon pick-me-up.
Or, if you have kids like me and need somewhere to burn off a little energy while you enjoy your coffee, check out Recess Cafe (208 S. Ashley St.). Daylight Saving Time still seems to be affecting my children, and they're waking up at the crack of dawn. I'm all for getting outside and enjoying some fresh air, but sometimes mama just needs to sit down with a hot cup of Joe.
I'm all for taking my butt to Recess, finding one of their nice, comfy chairs, and letting the kids read books and run around like they've never been in public before. The best part? There are plenty of other moms there who will hold their coffee cups in solidarity. We get it.
Eat & Drink: Game Day and Everything in Between
There is certainly no shortage of options for brunch, lunch, and dinner downtown. So, I'm putting together a list of places I'll have on my radar this weekend to make sure our visiting Spartans get a full taste of what our city has to offer, too.
One place I've been loving for lunch lately is Grizzly Peak Brewing Company (120 W. Washington St.). I've been mixing it up between the soup, burger, and pizza, but every time I leave full and happy. Plus, since it's game day Saturday, having a beer with lunch is totally acceptable. And if you want to keep strolling, you can enjoy a drink to-go within the downtown Social District.
Speaking of burgers, have you tried the burger at Black Pearl (302 S. Main St.)? Located in the 300 block of Main Street, I know I recently talked about their sushi, and now here I am talking about their burgers. But honestly, I'm not really sure you can find a bad thing on the menu. It's one of those places that keeps you coming back to try something new.
Let's switch things up a little and talk about Tabe Asian Fusion (209 S. Main St.). Located in the 200 block of South Main, Tabe offers fresh and delicious sushi options. And don't sleep on the cocktails. They taste just as good as they look! With three levels of dining space, each uniquely curated to offer a different experience, you're sure to find something to love. You definitely won't leave disappointed or with an empty stomach.
And finally, one restaurant that's always tried and true when you're looking for something comforting, warm, and cozy, especially as the temperatures start to drop: The West End Grill (120 W. Liberty St.). Their menu changes seasonally, so there's always something new to enjoy. And if you haven't checked out their updated interior, it's certainly worth a visit.
Shop Local: A Little Something for Everyone
Now let's talk shopping, because there are definitely plenty of options!
As I mentioned, the holidays are coming, and Rock Paper Scissors (216 S. Main St.) has already gotten the ball rolling. They're hosting their Holiday Preview Sale this weekend, November 6–8! Grab those ornaments you're truly not going to find anywhere else, fun stocking stuffers, unique gifts, and plenty of Ann Arbor-themed goodies. It's never too early to start checking a few things off your holiday shopping list, right?
Swing around the corner and check out Literati Bookstore (124 E. Washington St.). There are three floors of great reads, and if you're not sure what your next book should be, just ask! I've had some of the best conversations and received some of the best recommendations from their staff. Not just for myself, but for my kids, too. They're both completely different readers, but equally avid book lovers. There's something about a good independent bookstore that just makes you want to stay awhile.
I also don't think there are many downtowns that have an art center quite like the Ann Arbor Art Center (117 W. Liberty St.). Not only can you browse the shop and purchase locally made artwork, but the gallery spaces inside are worth exploring, even if you're not in the market for something new. It's a great way to discover local artists and find something truly unique.
And don't think we've forgotten about the Michigan gear! Obviously, Rally House (315 S. Main St.) is going to have something for everyone. The kids, him, her, and even your pet! If you're looking for a one-stop shop to get decked out in maize and blue before heading to the Big House, Rally House is definitely worth checking out.
Now, if you're looking for a more elevated collegiate piece, Ferne Boutique (217 S. Fourth Ave.) has an awesome collection. Not only do they carry apparel, but they also have really cute accessories to complete your game-day outfit. Whether you're cheering on Michigan at the Big House or watching basketball season roll around, they've got some great pieces to show off your Wolverine pride.
Make a Weekend of It in Downtown Ann Arbor!
Alright, this is getting pretty long, but I really don't want you to miss out on anything that might speak to you and make your weekend a little more special.
And if none of my recommendations quite caught your eye, don't worry. There are plenty more places to discover!
Head over to Main Street Ann Arbor, where you can explore our downtown business directory and browse everything by Eat, Drink, Shop, or Stay. Whether you're looking for a new restaurant to try, a cozy coffee shop, a unique local gift, or somewhere to spend the weekend, we've got you covered.
So bundle up, grab your friends and family, support some local businesses, and make a day of exploring everything downtown Ann Arbor has to offer.
And, of course... GO BLUE! 💙💛
